Ep #3: Epilogue - The Calm Before

The bunker was the same as above ground. A firefight had taken place deep inside the bunker and yet there was no sign of the President anywhere. Lenox had already come up with some conclusions of his own, but he needed to have some verification. They gathered in a conference room where Erin and Staci sat at the table. They didn’t know what else to do. Barrington stood close by them. Moore leaned up against the wall by the door. Lenox stood facing Sumter and Crane.

“The President is missing,” Lenox said calmly, but he was far from calm. “There’s been a firefight here where several members of his staff and Secret Service agents have been killed. All we find are you two specialists who appear to be the only survivors from this attack.”

Barrington frowned. “Knox, what are you saying? Do you think they have anything to do with it?”

Lenox didn’t respond to his friend. He kept his eyes on the two men before him. “You guys are only doing your job, right?” He shrugged. “I get it. You failed. That’s gotta be eating away at you. Gnawing from the inside. You failed to protect the President of the United States.”

Staci and Erin watched.

So did Moore and Barrington.

“We did the best we could,” Sumter said, pleading with Lenox to understand with his eyes.

Lenox was not showing him any mercy. “You lost the President.”

“No. I didn’t lose him. I…” He trailed off.

“Then where is he?”

He shrugged helplessly. “I don’t know.”

Lenox looked at Crane. “Where is the President?”

The oriental just glared at him, but he didn’t say a word.

Lenox took a deep breath and closed his eyes. When he opened them again, he focused intently on the men standing before him. “I’m going to ask you one more time. Where is the President of the United States?”

Sumter swallowed. “If I knew where he was, don’t you think I would tell you?”

Crane sneered. “Go seek him if you know where he is.”

Lenox looked into the Oriental’s eyes. In the language of North Korean, he said, “’Silence!’”

Crane’s eyes widened in surprise. Then, he went for his gun.

He never made it.

Before the others even knew what happened, Lenox snapped up his arm, leveled his .357 Magnum and fired a single round into the man’s head. The man called Crane fell onto the floor as Staci and Erin rose to their feet in shock.

Lenox turned to Sumter and pressed the hot barrel of his gun against his forehead. “We’re running out of time. Tell me what I want to know or you’ll get the same thing!”

Time had run out and Lenox decided he had lost all the patience he was going to lose.
